Artist's Comments

This Stone Circle is made up of 64 large stones enclosing a low earth platform; there may originally have been about 80 stones. Stone Circles like this one were built in the later Bronze Age (1400-800 BC). We do not know what they were used for, but they were probably associated with religious rituals which may have included observations of the sun and the moon.

A stone head found at this site was probably carved in the pre-Christian Iron Age (400 BC - 400 AD) and may indicate that this monument remained a place of ceremonial activity for many centuries after it was first built.
Beltany - from Bealtaine (connected with the May festival; origin obscure)
