The Earls by garybonner The Earls by garybonner
Oil on board
Painting i'm thinking of putting into the flight of the earls festival in Donegal.

In 1607 a group of Ireland's noble elite left their land and people to find refuge and seek assistance for their cause in Europe. Their departure became known as the Flight of the Earls and would cause a ripple through history that would last to present day. The Flight of the Earls marked the end of an ancient Gaelic Order and made way for the Plantation of Ulster. It also became a key event in the establishment of the Irish Diaspora across the globe.

Stunning work. The details in the dress is just lovely and the dreary background and the position of the two figures gave off a sense of sadness and foreboding. Then I read your artists comments and the composition of the painting made sense.

Impressive. There's something in their silhouettes which really... speaks... from this painting. The woman looks as if she's wondering about something beyond her eyes' reach. With hope, I think. The man seems resigned - he could be praying. Or maybe just saying goodbye to the land of his ancestors...?
Beatiful piece of art.

i wish i could come up with an artistic appreciation type comment for you, but im on the tail end of a panic attack (browsing art is my way of coping) so ill make do with a few short lines.

i enjoy the smoothness of this piece. you can most definately pick it was done with oils and its a splendid subject that you chose.

not being able to see the faces of the subjects i find intriguing, almost as if i have a glimpse of them without them realising i was there. a brief peek into their thoughts. calming, and thought provoking.

Awww! thanks a million Emma, got about six hundred messages, its mad, can't keep up with them...
Just letting you know i've accepted that show in Belfast. It's going to be in a gallery in Strandmillis called canvas, its a nice area and a good show space. I'm trying to hold on to some of my featured works for it, Its kind of nice for me as i used to live up there when i was a student...It'll be in a few months time as i'm flat out at the moment. It would be great if you and your Dad and anyone else you know could pop round on the night as the support would be great..
I'll let you know closer to the date and thanks again for your comments:) , Gary
